GRAMMATICAL PROSODY
Starting this poem with the subject “I” would be a certain mistake,
although starting it with “you” would erroneously suggest “I” exist,
if not in direct opposition to “you”, then as some tandem concept.
“He” and “she” seem like just another contentious taxonomy,
“us” would assume some sort of collectivity and self-awareness,
“it” is inherently dehumanizing by implying object, not subject,
and “they” is always so ominous, vague, ubiquitous.
So without subject or predicate, what purpose does this poem
COSMIC DRUNK
to me you taste
like the ethyl formate
near the center of the galaxy –
all cold particle raspberries
and the sharp scent of rum,
all distant complexities
and hydrocarbons,
maybe.
MODERN FIREPROOF
an empty vessel fills itself with
the sludge and pulse of the city :
: : wires and glass across the sky
[ the flowing like arterial pressure ]
an empty vessel has options :
: time like a marble block uncarved :
[ assuming a form unbelievable
carrying whatever a cavern needs ]
an empty vessel forgets the kiln : : :
sliding through grasping fingers
[ a site for the uncontainable
an object for any subject ]
an empty vessel envies the statue
: knowing not its own artistry : :
[ how strange it must be to be solid
how static it must be to be whole ]
DAWN
I promise to outlive you
so I can fill your heart with bees.
So your hands will always linger
with lemon peels.

Ascend another Costco clearcut
Into new skyscape across the highway –
The horizon cuts a hazy yellow yawn
a scramble, a cycle,
pressing down
to daffodil valley, cloudless –
In our oracular excitement,
we screech and squirm and sulk
Another squander of timber
spending oxygen in bulk
All the hedonistic honeys
humble in rows –
Five star safety rating
Affordable death machine
