Program of Project Description

Throughout this in-program ILC, Co-Curricular Community Gardens Project, the student will be working alongside peers through collaborative planning and management of the campus Community Gardens to grow diverse, organic vegetables. The student will work with peers through the process of planning for a growing season, and through the implementation of those plans in actual garden plots at the Evergreen State College. In the co-curricular model that is being developed, the plots will be managed by all students involved. Student learning as well as garden produce will be assessed and utilized in academic programs. The student will meet with her peers, and Terroir/Meroir faculty, two times a week during which she will tend and manage the collaborative community garden plot, with an additional focus on basics of composting techniques, science, and maintenance.

Texts to be studied include: Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades by Steve Solomon and Marina McShane, Composting for a New Generation by Michelle Balz, and Teaming With Microbes by Jeff Lowenfels & Wayne Lewis.
